Request Expert

Expert was the Director of Undergraduate Pediatric Education at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD, from 1986-1993. During his tenure, the Pediatric Department was awarded the Ambulatory Pediatric Association Outstanding Teaching Award. After retiring from the US Air Force, Expert joined the faculty at the University of Nebraska as a Pediatrician, a Pediatric Nephrologist, and a Pediatric Educator. He was at Nebraska from 1993-2003. In 2003, During his tenure at Nebraska he was the first ever Associate Chiar for Pediatric Education, established the first ever assessment methodology for vetting volunteer faculty, and took the Pediatric Third Year Clerkship from "dead last" to "first place" amongst all clerkships at Nebraska. He also completely revised all of the teaching programs for the Department and established Pediatrics as the "go to place" if you waned to learn how to train volunteer faculty to teach in their medical practice. Expert took over as the Department Chairman and Residency Program Director at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center - Amarillo. In this capacity he got the Department in the "black" and got the residency program off of probation. Expert was elevated to the Dean's Office in 2007 as the Assistant Dean for Curriculum Evaluation and the Associate Dean for Faculty Development. His greatest accomplishment in these positions was to lead the Texas Tech University School of Medicine through an extremely successful LCME re-accreditation. Expert was recruited in 2009 to join the University of Texas Health Sciences Center Regional Academic Health Center, Harlingen, Texas, as the Assistant Designated Institutional Official (director of graduate medical education) and the Assistant to the Dean for Special Projects (specifically to help guide the school through an LCME re-accreditation visit). He remained in the position until early 2015 when he transition to the Employer (UTRGV SOM). Expert is the past Associate Chief Medical Officer at Su Clinica Familiar in Harlingen - a Federally Qualified Health Center, past Chief of Pediatrics, and the past Chief Medical Information Officer attesting to his broad knowledge and skills in not only practicing medicine but how to run a medical practice and an medical informatics operation. He is now a Professor of Pediatrics at the UTRGV SOM directing the clinical skills instruction for first and second year medical students as well as the course director for the renal module in year two of medical school. Along, the way Expert has established himself as a national leader in faculty development, especially developing academic faculty to embrace business principles in doing their job. He has published over 60 articles in the peer reviewed literature attesting to his skills as an academic leader with a strong business focus.

Expert has more than 36 years experience in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology. He obtained his training in general pediatrics at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He continued his training in Pediatric Nephrology at the University Of Minnesota Hospitals in Minneapolis. He was the Chief of Pediatric Nephrology and Chief of the Dialysis Unit at Wilford Hall from 1981-1986. From there, he became the Chief of Pediatric Nephrology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. In addition, at Wilford Hall he was also the training program director and wrote the first ever curriculum for the Pediatric Residency Program as well as a case-based curriculum for teaching Pediatric Nephrology.

Expert is an expert in career development for academic faculty. He has also done consulting work in professional development with the Boy Scouts and other local organizations. Specifically, Expert emphasizes having a personal mission statement, managing yourself in the concept of time, and a career plan that focuses on strength development. Expert is considered an expert in educational assessment having authored numerous peer-reviewed medical education publications on assessing program development and program change. He has also complete numerous workshops on conflict management and conflict resolution.
