Biomechanical Engineering
ID: 737096
Oregon, USA
His current academic positions are as a Clinical/Research Professor in both the Department of Emergency Medicine (School of Medicine) and the Division of Biomaterials & Biomechanics (School of Dentistry). He recently joined the faculty of Human Physiology as a Courtesy Professor, assisting in the growth of their Bioengineering Programs. He directed the Regenerative Bioengineering Laboratory as an Adjunct Professor of Biology and Mechanical & Materials Engineering at Portland State University.
Before, he held positions in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Biology & Biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Orthopedics and Physiology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, both in Worcester, Massachusetts. He also held an adjunct position in Clinical Science at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, Grafton, Massachusetts. He has a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Applied Mechanics in Bioengineering with postdoctoral training in orthopedic biomechanics and bachelor's/masters degrees in Engineering Mechanics, including undergraduate pre-medicine training, all from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin.
Expert has published over 250 journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters describing his research in cell, tissue, joint, biomaterials, implant, body, injury, and environment biomechanical engineering. These articles describe various perspectives on the application of biomechanics, bioengineering, medical device design, clinical science, biostatistics, and epidemiology as applied to living systems. His scholarly works have been cited over 2,695 times according to Google Scholar, 1,774 times according to the Web of Science index, 2,019 times through Research Gate, and 1,630 times through Scopus. He has served as a peer-reviewer for more than 20 journals. He currently serves on the Editorial Board for the Annals of Biomedical Engineering, having also served on the Journal of Biomechanical Engineering and the Journal of Biomechanics Boards.
Expert has acquired federal and private funding totaling over $1M supporting his research programs as a Principal Investigator. He has maintained support from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and other public/private agencies beginning 2002. He is an active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), American Society of Biomechanics (ASB), Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS), Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM), American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), and Sigma Xi Scientific Honor Society.
He has trained nearly 1,200 students in over 30 lecture-based courses relevant to biomechanics and bioengineering, including fundamental mechanical engineering and biology courses. His teaching explicitly addresses public health issues, focusing on biomechanical, biochemical, and bioelectric phenomena associated with anatomic and physiologic functions. His research team has included 128 undergraduate and graduate students over the years, each addressing individualized project-based design and research experiences in biomechanical engineering leading to published senior, master, and doctoral theses/dissertations.
His forensic practice has led to opinions in disputed matters addressing crash/incident reconstruction, injury biomechanics, medical device failure, toxic tort, medical malpractice, and intellectual property. He is routinely qualified as an expert in mechanical engineering, bioengineering, biomechanics, and clinical science in civil and defense courts.
