His research has been concentrated on the biochemical genetics and breeding of carrots, potatoes, onions, garlic, and cucumbers. The main focus of his work has been developing new carrot varieties. He works to improve culinary and nutritional quality while maintaining productivity. He oversees the national (USDA) carrot breeding program, as well as public sector cooperators in California, Florida, New York, Michigan, Poland, India, Pakistan, USSR, Netherlands, Germany, Greece, and Norway. He also has been active in overseeing private sector cooperators in the American, European, and South American vegetable seed companies. He has worked closely with the dehydrating garlic and onion industry, as well as some biotechnical companies with vegetable ventures.

VEGETABLE GENETIC IMPROVEMENT. Expert's research activities have included the development of vegetable germplasm with improved nutritional value and flavor, application of new biotechnical methods to vegetable genetic improvement, and garlic true seed production. All of his improved genetic stocks are freely available to requestors.
