He can scale up the work done in the lab to the pilot plant & then to the plant. The lab process & equipment conditions are different from that of the pilot plant or the plant which necessitates changing the process parameters. This is possible only after studying the process & the lab work thoroughly.
A typical Surfactant manufacturer has to produce a large no. of products so as to satisfy his customers. In such a scenario, the job of "Production Planning” is very important. He is conversant with the following: 1. Understanding the customers’ needs 2. Knowledge of the inventory 3. Controlling the man, machine, materials available & ensuring their proper utilization. 4. Maintaining the quality & delivery schedules.
The existing products may not give the desired performance due to a change in the process conditions at the customer's end. This necessitates "product improvement” in the areas of the formulation or the change in the process conditions. He has a wide expertise in this field.
He is fully conversant with all the unit operations:
viz.condensation,blending,polymerization,esterification,distillation,etc.involved in the "product manufacturing".
It is an essential function in the production of any chemical product. It involves "in process" & "finished product testing”. He is fully conversant with all the methods of analysis of the "Surfactants."
It is necessary to control all the process parameters in a chemical process to achieve the quality product. This involves "instrumental" as well as "manual" process controls. The production control techniques & methods vary from product to product. He has a thorough knowledge of all the production control techniques involved in the manufacture of the surfactants.
He is conversant with the following functions associated with the research & development: New Product Development Improvement in the existing products to meet the customer's requirements. Substitution of the existing ingredients in a formulation or a product with the cheap raw materials, wherever possible, to achieve the cost reduction without affecting the performance of the product.
